Samantha Fernandez, LISW

Samantha has an undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of Iowa, and a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of Iowa. Samantha is licensed through the Iowa Board of Behavioral Health. Before starting her career in mental health counseling, Samantha served in the United States Air Force and enjoys working with fellow veterans experiencing PTSD, depression, anxiety and other mental health challenges. Through compassionate care and evidence-based approaches such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), mindfulness therapy, CBT, existential therapy, attachment theory, and trauma-informed modalities, Samantha aims to empower clients to cultivate self-awareness, develop emotional regulation skills, and foster meaningful connections. Samantha is dedicated to creating a safe and supportive therapeutic environment where each individual can heal, grow, and build a life worth living.

Samantha has worked in community mental health and has experience providing individual therapy services to adolescents 16 years and older and adults of all ages. Samantha has a passion for working with individuals in the LGBTQ+ community, and individuals experiencing intense emotions, to include those diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Substance Use Disorders and other complex emotional and behavioral challenges. Samantha has also been facilitating the STEPPS program for 3 years, which teaches individuals emotional regulation and behavior management skills. Samantha is starting a new STEPPS program in April 2024 with co-facilitator Jason Hunt, LISW, as well as a STAIRWAYS group and adolescent STEPPS group.
